B. 1977
Gregg Russell was born in California in 1977 and moved to Idaho when he was just an infant. He was raised in a rural farming community and spent much of his youth competing in athletics. During high school, Russell experimented with art but did not pursue it seriously. After high school, he attended Boise State University and earned a degree in Elementary Education. It was during this time, while on a study break in the library, that he discovered the work of Thomas Moran. Inspired by Moran’s ability to paint small studies “en plein air” and later use them to create larger studio works, Gregg began to seek out artist who worked in a similar style. He took workshops with notable artists Robert Moore, Gregory Packard, Tom Browning, and Matt Smith.
While he learned to paint, Gregg was also building a successful career in education. Gregg has proudly been an educator for 16 years, working in a variety of capacities including an elementary teacher, vice principal, principal, college professor, and as an assistant superintendent. He recently graduated with his Ph.D. in educational leadership. His research interests focused on principal leadership and change management.
Whether it’s art or education, Gregg continues to strive to get better. “I’m always interested in learning, experimenting, and pushing myself to improve my work.” This effort has paid off as Gregg has won several awards including the Stanley R & Robert E. Wright Foundation Scholarship to study at the Scottsdale Artist School. He also has participated in several national juried shows including the American Impressionist Society's National Juried Show, Scottsdale Artist Schools' Best and Brightest, and the CM Russell Art Auction. Gregg was selected as the 2007 Idaho Paints Idaho Grand Prize Winner for his painting "Weiser River Winter" sponsored by The Easter Idaho Art Museum. He has also had an article published in Plein Air Today featuring his favorite place to paint. His work hangs in numerous corporate and personal collections including the Permanent Collection at the Eastern Idaho Art Museum, The City of Meridian, The City of Boise, Mountain West Bank, Idaho Governor C.L. “Butch” Otter, and CEO of Zions Bank Scott Anderson.
